1 Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes,
2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:
3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. 1:1-3
St Paul addressed his letter to the Christians in Corinth:
“To the church of God that is in Corinth…”
and,
“to those sanctified in Christ Jesus…”
These statements are foundational to all understanding about Christianity.
The Church is created by God. It begins with God. It is designed and formed by God. It is sustained by God.
The Church is not created by its own works, or knowledge, or decision, or goodness – but the Church is made up of people who are sanctified and holy by the grace and work of Jesus Christ. Looking to, and believing in, Jesus Christ Christians receive His forgiveness and holiness – they are sanctified.
Because the Church belongs to God, even its own imperfections cannot cancel the redemption that the Son of God has accomplished. The redeeming power and gift of God overcome the believer’s sins – so despite our own daily struggle with sin, we remain forgiven in the name of Jesus Christ.
