“Christian Faith is the Measure of Jesus, Not of Me or Others”
The sermon today considers all three readings from Genesis 50:15-21; Romans 12:14-21 and Luke 6:36-42.
When Jospeh’s brothers were afraid that after their father’s death Jospeh might take revenge on them for the evil ways they had treated them, Joseph said:
“Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? 20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. 21 So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Genesis 50
Joseph’s brothers knew they had sinned greatly and feared punishment. They desired mercy. Joseph knew he was not to withhold mercy, he was to forgive.
In Luke 6 Jesus said, “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” Disciples of Jesus are sons and daughters of God; a God of mercy. Sinners can rebel against God and refuse His mercy. But when they know and fear their sins, God has mercy on the repentant sinner. Followers of Jesus can do no less.
So Paul exhorted in Romans 12:
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all…
