We sinful humans do not naturally understand self-giving, self-sacrificing love. We always mix in thinking of self-aggrandizing or self-power even in what we might consider helpful behavior.
In Jesus Christ God has loved us sinners, even to the point of dying on a cross to save us. This is the love God wants to shower upon us, so that it overflows upon others as well. In 1 Corinthians 13 St. Paul teaches us this self-sacrificing love for the other is what endures eternally. May God so grant us to believe and to live for Christ and others.
