“He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the Lord.” (Malachi 3:3)
The prophet Malachi spoke of two messengers in chapter 3. The messenger who would prepare the way of the Lord and the Messenger of the Covenant. The first messenger was John the Baptist who pointed out the people’s sins and faults so they might know their sins and repent– but sinners can not purify themselves.
Purification to be done on the Levites, and all of God’s royal priesthood, (1 Peter 2:9-10) is done by the prophesied Messenger of the Covenant. This is Jesus. He is the one who will purify God’s people.
