Traffic lights direct and keep us alive by encouraging order and preventing chaos. Directing which vehicles and pedestrians go and which stop allows orderly movement and helps prevent crashes. What if everybody decided red, yellow and green lights mean anything they want them to mean?
In this Sunday’s reading from Jeremiah 23 God warns against false prophets giving false messages which lead to God’s judgement. Without God’s Word human teachings are “visions of their own minds”; “Vain” and say “all is well” when disaster is about to happen.
16 Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. 17 They say continually to those who despise the word of the LORD, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.’”
But God’s Word is true and real. God means to give life through His Word. Sin is sin. Death is death. Forgiveness is forgiveness.
