On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. John 20:19-20
The disciples’ fear of the Jewish leaders was not unreasonable, but it was not the greatest and lasting reality! How many times every day do we think about security and safety? Locked doors on homes and cars, security systems, computer antivirus software, health precautions, etc. There truly are dangers from thieves, attacks, illnesses and so forth — and the disciples really faced danger too.
But Jesus’ resurrection puts a whole new light on everything! He is risen! He has defeated death! He has defeated the Roman soldiers! He has defeated the religious leaders against Him!… He gives His forgiveness, life and peace.
